Rolf Jacob Sartorius was a Tulsa native. As his parents were incapable of taking care of him shortly after his birth, he was given up for adoption and moved to Virginia. His adoptive parents brought him up within Reston Virginia. Seven years old, he began singing in musicals and discovered his enthusiasm for performing. In the days before the closing of Vine, an American short-form hosting site for video in 2017, Sartorius lip-syncing videos posted through the site gained more than eight million followers in August of 2016. Social media provided him with a way to escape harassment because he'd been victimized. He admitted before Musical.ly that he wasn't very active. He thought that everyone watched him except for the camera.
